GM Diet vs Intermittent Fasting: Which Is Better?

GM diet vs intermittent fasting: which is better?

Two popular approaches compared on what you eat, how long it lasts, and what to expect.

Short answer: they solve different problems. The GM diet is a one-week, very restrictive plan that changes what you eat each day. Intermittent fasting changes when you eat and is meant to be followed long term. Neither suits everyone, and the GM diet itself has not been studied.

What each approach involves

The GM diet lasts seven days. Each day allows certain food groups: fruit on day 1, vegetables on day 2, both on day 3, bananas and milk on day 4, protein on days 5 and 6, and brown rice on day 7.

Intermittent fasting does not set which foods you eat. Instead it limits the hours you eat in, for example eating within an 8-hour window each day, or eating much less on two days a week.

What results to expect

The GM diet usually causes a quick drop on the scale, but much of it is water held with stored carbohydrate, which tends to return when you eat normally. Intermittent fasting tends to cause slower weight loss that depends on eating less overall, much like other calorie-reduced diets.

Who should avoid both

Neither approach is suitable without medical advice if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, under 18, have diabetes or take medication that affects blood sugar, or have a history of disordered eating.

Which to choose

If you want a short, structured reset, read what the GM diet can and cannot do first. If you want something you can keep up for months, a pattern you can sustain, with plenty of vegetables, fruit, whole grains and regular protein, matters more than the method.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GM diet a type of intermittent fasting?

No. The GM diet controls which foods you eat each day. Intermittent fasting controls the times you eat.

Can I combine the GM diet with intermittent fasting?

We do not recommend it. The GM diet is already very low in calories and protein, and adding fasting windows raises the risk of dizziness and fatigue.

Which gives faster results on the scale?

The GM diet usually shows a faster early drop, mostly water. Intermittent fasting is slower but designed to be followed for longer.

A note on safety

This is general information, not medical advice. Speak to a doctor or registered dietitian before starting any restrictive diet, especially if you have a health condition or take medication. See our medical disclaimer.
